North Santiam Watershed Council |
|
Providing opportunities for stakeholders to cooperate in promoting and sustaining the health of the watershed and its communities. Welcome! The North Santiam Watershed Council (NSWC) is a citizen-based, stakeholder created, non-profit organization concerned about healthy rivers and streams as well as human communities in the North Santiam and Santiam River Basin.
The North Santiam Watershed is located in the Central Cascades in Oregon and flows into the Willamette Valley. The headwaters of the North Santiam River are in Mt. Jefferson and the watershed drains approximately 766 square miles in area over 92 river miles. Historically, the watershed provided a majority of the winter steelhead production and about 1/3 of the spring Chinook salmon production in the Willamette Basin. Although the river is very healthy overall, it is listed on the Clean Water Act 303 (d) list for summer temperatures exceeding standards.
Accomplishments ● Completed assessment of watershed ● Annual cleanup of Little North Santiam River, a popular recreation spot ● Restoration projects to improve in-stream & upland habitats ● Completed education pilot program in local schools (Shed Ed)
● Implementing “Your Watershed, Your Community” outreach strategy for 4 + years
● Collected water quality data through monitoring programs over 5 + years
● Improved fish passage on Mad Creek by replacing culvert ● Recruitment for restoration projects on private property in Stout Creek, Snake Deford Creek, and Marion Creek subwatersheds
