Snake Deford Floodplain Restoration


The Snake & Deford Creeks near Mill City, Oregon.

Combined, the Snake and Deford watersheds cover about 7.5 square miles throughout a broad valley with multiple river terraces.  Snake-Deford consistently have redds, therefore, has potential to supporting listed steelhead populations and possible Chinook.  The Watershed Council is working with landowners on a variety of stream restoration projects that integrate land uses with improvements such as culvert replacements, weed control and revegetation with native trees and shrubs.

An assessment of Deford (Snake) Creek was completed by consultants with appropriate technical background to compile existing data and survey portions of the stream where landowners approved access.  The document provides an overview of the stream and is used as a tool to plan projects with volunteer landowners and to secure grant funds to implement those projects.  Download document.

Disclaimer: Recommendations in this report are provided by the consultant as suggestions based on their experience and information they compiled, they are not activities the Watershed Council plans to implement unless landowners express an interest and further feasibility analysis is completed as needed.

Large wood placement completed at 24 locations
Three crossings removed and 2 new crossing placed
Landowner signed up for CREP for fencing and riparian buffer restoration
